The University of Wisconsin-Platteville provides eight accredited online degree programs, including, appropriately, a master's degree in distance education leadership, which is receiving national attention as one of only three such programs in the country.

Online education has skyrocketed in the last decade. Eduventures estimates that in fall 2010, 2.78 million students enrolled in a fully online program, which represents 14 percent of all higher education enrollments. Furthermore, the Sloan Consortium reports that 1.6 million students enrolled in at least one online course in 2002, whereas 6.1 million students enrolled in fall 2010, representing 31 percent of all students enrolled in higher education.
