Eric first came to UW-Platteville in 1980 to study technical communication. After graduating, Eric felt a pull toward the law enforcement field. As a student, he had worked as a resident advisor, helping students solve their problems, and it sparked his initial interest in the profession. Unfortunately without any firsthand law enforcement experience, he had trouble getting hired.

So Eric returned to UW-Platteville and began working on a second bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. “I wouldn’t reverse the way I got my degrees. My communication degree has probably been more helpful—especially in leadership positions,” Eric said.

“Completing my degree was not a requirement or necessary for advancing my career,” Eric said. “I wanted to finish it and set a good example for my kids to finish what you started.”

“If I was aware of how quickly I could’ve gotten back into the academic world, I would have done it much sooner,” he said.

Eric is now in his 26th year with the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department, working as an Inspector (Undersheriff) responsible for both the law enforcement and corrections side of the department. In addition to administrative litigation and human resources work, he mentors new command staff and works cooperatively with the 29 police agencies in Waukesha County.

Outside of work, Eric pursues a different passion: building his own RV-8A airplane. Eric is a private pilot and member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). As a student, he got his license at the Platteville Municipal Airport.

Eric’s wide-ranging interests have not only taken him down a different career path, they’ve led him to one in which they are an asset. “In law enforcement, you need a variety of people with different skill sets and knowledge bases. What we do is complex, and we need people who can solve a variety of problems,” he said.

With only nine credits left to complete, Eric was hired by the Waukesha (Wis.) County Sheriff’s Department as a Supervisor, and put his criminal justice degree on hold. He returned to UW-Platteville in 2011 —this time, online—to finish his degree.
degree for personal experience, Angella Donovan could have skipped the formalities. The first graduate of the Organizational Change Leadership program was highly motivated to apply, register, and complete her coursework in two years.

“As 2010 wound down, I was working for the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, I owned a wedding planning business, and my four children ranged from one to eight years old. I sold my business in December of 2010 and by June of 2011, I was bored and knew I needed to do something else,” Angella said.

She made a quick decision to start a master’s degree in organizational change leadership, submitted her FAFSA, and began working with her advisor to register in time for fall courses. “Liz Lucas was a huge help. I wanted to finish quickly and took two courses a semester. As I approached the end of my coursework, I appreciated Ron Bonlender, Susan Hansen, and Derek Dachelet working together so I could complete my capstone project and graduate this month.”

Beginning the program was the first of many changes for Angella. While earning her degree, she started a new job with the City of Platteville and went through a divorce.

The constant in her life has been her involvement with the Kappa Alpha Sigma sorority. A member as an undergrad at UW-Platteville, she has served on the alumni board the last 15 years, the last 13 as president. But the sorority, by its very nature, is in a constant state of change, putting Angella in an ideal position to offer guidance through her capstone project.

“When I pledged, there were nine actives. I saw the group grow to 50 and presently there are 20,” Angella said. “I’ll be working with the active members to develop a strategic plan that will facilitate needed change. Unlike many sororities with national affiliations, Kappa Alpha Sigma is a local sorority, responsible for their own constitution and managing all of the associated activities and business.”

“The pattern has been that with growth, there are changes to the constitution and sometimes a lack of understanding about why those rules are in place,” Angella said. “I want the sorority to stay true to its roots and not lose its identity while meeting the changing requirements of the university, such as raising the GPA standards for members.”

“Angella is a perfect example of the type of person the Organizational Change Leadership program is targeted toward,” said Professor Misty Lemon-Rogers. “As a young professional who is striving to become a leader in her field, the insight Angella brought to our online classroom through the discussion board and team exercises were beneficial to the entire class. It is no surprise that Angella continues to be successful in her career, and I look forward to continuing to mentor Angella as she continues on her lifelong journey of learning and success.”

Jeff Marenda

Jeff Marenda can chrome almost anything. He’s spent the past 26 years working in the plating industry, the last 16 in chrome. He supervises a staff of 25 employees that plates parts for varied industries, including Harley-Davidson, Inc. For this motorcycle and car enthusiast, who purchased his first motorcycle at age 12, the work is a good fit.

Jeff values completing what he starts, however long it may take – including his education. Although he left UW-Platteville in 1985 after his freshman year, he returned as a distance education student in 2011 and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in May.

“As the years go by and life takes its course, it makes it more difficult to go back to school. At this age, you’ve got your life established,” Jeff said.

In the 1990s, Jeff completed an associate’s degree from UW-Waukesha and 38 business credits from Marion College. He was close to completing a bachelor’s degree, and his boss nudged him toward it. “My boss knew not having completed the degree was a monkey on my back, and told me he knew I could do it.”

Jeff was also motivated by his mom. Although she never pressured him to complete his education, he knew it would make her happy. “The number one thing that kept me going at the end was that I wanted to surprise my mom. I wanted to see the expression on her face when I told her I’ve graduated.”

Jeff chose to complete his business administration degree via the print-based option, as it allowed greater flexibility than the online programs.

“The print format really appealed to me because it allowed me to work at my own pace. If things were crazy at work, I could back off school. When I had more time, I could hit the books harder,” Jeff said. “The disadvantage is that you basically have to teach yourself the material without the benefit of in-class lectures.”

But Jeff found the instructors helpful and quick to respond. “The teachers were awesome. I got responses the same day. It blew me away how responsive the instructors were!”

During the application process, Jeff chose to prepare and submit portfolios of his work, hoping to earn course credit based on his life/work experience. “It was a lot of work, but to me it was well worth it because it was much more cost effective and saved time. It took me about a month to do each portfolio.”

Returning to school wasn’t easy. “The biggest challenge was getting back into it. The last time I took accounting was 15 years ago. My first exam score was not very good, and I was a bit discouraged and thought ‘how am I going to get through this?’ It was tough, but I buckled down and kept at it and the scores kept getting better and I ended up with a B in the class. I told myself, ’I’ve come this far already and I can’t stop. I can get through this.’ I tried harder.”
"Organizational change is everywhere and nowhere," said Caryn Stanley, who has recently assumed the role of Organizational Change Leadership Program Coordinator. “We all deal with organizational change, but many times we don’t realize that it’s where we really need to focus.”

Caryn spent several years in upper management with a Fortune 500 company and played an integral part in onboarding employees after a hostile takeover. Some things went well; some didn’t. “I’m thankful there’s a program that will train leaders how to handle those kinds of situations more strategically for ALL stakeholders,” Caryn said.

Her work experience will be an asset to the program, which has enrolled 56 students in its first two years. And, her personal experience will be an asset to her advisees. Like many of them, Caryn earned her master’s degree in organizational management and behavior online, while working full-time.

Caryn left her corporate job in Lafayette, Indiana, when her husband was offered a faculty position at UW-Platteville. As she pondered her options, he encouraged her to consider teaching, knowing her education and work experience, which includes recruiting and training employees, would be assets in the classroom. She has taught several human resources and organizational behavior courses on-campus since 2008 and began teaching online in 2011.

Looking back, it seems a natural career progression for Caryn to step into the role of Organizational Change Leadership Program Coordinator. She is thrilled to be teaching, advising, and coordinating the program and is excited about the opportunities it affords a wide range of students.

“The master’s degree in Organizational Change Leadership can apply to any employee in any profession,” Caryn said. “All organizations go through change.”

Tania Pitzer worked in the Students with Disabilities Office serving on-campus students for 10 years, assessing prospective students’ needs and providing training and general office support. As the new MSPM advisor, she is looking forward to working with distance education students. She will also provide outreach services to MSCJ students.
In the DLC, I’ll have a broader picture of the university and be able to do more with the students,” Tania said.

The new part-time MSPM advising position was created to accommodate the increased number of student enrollments. “We have seen a steady growth with the MSPM program over the past several years, and to ensure that we continue to provide excellent services to our students, we knew that an additional advising resource would be needed,” said Outreach Program Manager Amy Griswold, who oversees advising services. “Tania is a great addition to our advising team and the MSPM program.”

Tania is originally from Macomb, Ill. She attended Western Illinois University for three years, before transferring to UW-Platteville. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1999.

“I’m looking forward to making connections with the distance students and helping them get their degrees,” Tania said.
Melissa Huekels wasted no time putting her master’s degree in post-secondary education: student affairs to work. Just two days after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa, she joined the DLC as a BSCJ advisor.

“I really tried to find a position that would fit my passion—helping students find success—and this job came up and I looked at it and said, ‘That is me. That is 100% me.’ It’s a good fit.”

Melissa is originally from Kieler, Wis., and studied business management and sociology at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Her experience working for the Student Life Office and as a residence hall advisor led her to choose a career in higher education.

While at UNI, Melissa completed a graduate assistantship for the Department of Residence working as a student engagement coordinator. Now, she’s eager to work with another set of students.

“I know that distance education students have a lot of other commitments outside of attaining their degree, and I think it’s going to be very important for me to help them continue on that path,” Melissa said. “I really want to help students be successful in their role as students, and that’s why I’m so excited about my role—I get to help them find success in the academic world.”

Matthew Meyer’s achievements and his commitment to earning his master’s degree were recognized when he was recently awarded the Dawn Drake Excellence in Distance Education Scholarship. Since graduating with his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from UW-Platteville in 2002, Meyer has worked for River Valley Testing Corporation in Neenah and Green Bay, Wis.

“I was starting to get to a point in my career where I felt my skills were plateauing a bit, and I had more complex projects that didn’t fit the mold of the idealized design scenario all the time,” Meyer said. “I talked it over with my family in great detail because it was going to be a big commitment, and they encouraged me to get started.”

Meyer did more than get started. With his family’s encouragement and support, in the fall of 2010, he took Advanced Finite Element Methods and Linear Algebra. He studied 4-6 hours a day on weekdays and 6-8 hours on Saturdays and Sundays, leaving him very little free time.

“After that first semester, I realized I didn’t need to go quite that fast,” Meyer said. “My son was just a few months old at that time. Now that he’s two, some of my more enjoyable moments during my studies are when he crawls up on my lap while I’m working. His random tapping of numbers on my calculator and his pretending to read my textbook keep me pushing forward with a smile on my face.”

Meyer’s dedication has also impacted his eleven-year-old daughter, who has improved her own study habits and grades as a result of her father’s commitment. Meyer, who currently has a 4.0 GPA, plans to take a summer and a fall course and graduate in December.

“Advice I have, particularly if you have a family, is to be up front with them immediately so they understand the demands,” Meyer said. “Share your study schedule so they have an understanding of when you’re busy – and if you’re done early, great. If you don’t set that schedule, it can be a challenge to manage the expectations of your family and your expectations for the class and what you want to get done.”

Meyer’s careful planning has been just one piece of his success.

“Matt submitted work of a highly professional level that was easy to read, progressed in a logical manner, explained his thought process as he progressed through the solution to the problem, and summarized the results,” said Mark Meyers, UW-Platteville Professor of Engineering and fellow geotechnical engineer. “Matt was the natural leader in my class. He exhibits professionalism and superior technical writing skills as evidenced in the technical reports he submitted, but also in the course discussions and paper reviews. This is likely a carryover from his professional experience and his UW-Platteville undergraduate experience.”

Meyer’s employer has been encouraging and supportive as well, and has already benefited from his efforts. “The geotechnical classes have been very beneficial – especially the geosynthetics class, which opened my eyes to all the products available and the applications for them. While I had some background in many of the geotechnical topics, the classes provided me with a heightened understanding and some immediate results that I could directly apply to my daily work,” Meyer said.

“I’ve now accumulated eight years as a UW-Platteville student and both my undergrad and graduate student experiences have been very positive. I think the education has been top-notch, and it has helped me tremendously. It’s shaped me as a person and professionally,” Meyer said.
Consider summer school
Are you thinking about taking summer courses? You just might be on to something.
There are some definite benefits to summer school.

1) Keeping your momentum. You have made great progress through the spring semester; you can keep that pace going without breaking your stride. Momentum can also be a great motivator. Adding a summer course brings you closer to your goal of obtaining your degree.

[click to return to newsletter]

2) Financial savings. The tuition rate for online undergraduate and graduate students is scheduled to increase by $10 per credit for the fall term. You can beat the tuition increase.

3) Time. If you are motivated and know you can commit to the shortened time frame, you can complete a course in 10 weeks instead of 16. You’ll be covering the same depth of information, so we do encourage you to choose your course wisely to ensure your motivation meets the demands.

Call your advisor today to discuss which courses might work for you this summer.

Sometimes, a little self-evaluation and perspective is just what we need mid-way through a course. Review these Keys to Success in a Distance Degree Program and look for ways to give yourself a boost.

And, of course, whether you need advice or an attentive ear, we are available to talk things over. Don’t hesitate to seek support through any of these means. We want to help you succeed!

“There were days that I wondered why I would do this. I
enjoyed all of it. I thought it was hard. It required a lot of work,” she said.
But Janet Crittenden’s hard work paid off.

Since graduating in December of 2012 with a master’s degree
in project management from UW-Platteville Online, Janet Crittenden is enjoying
her new position as Project Manager/Process Improvement Coordinator for the
University of Minnesota Rochester—a career change at age 53.

Janet had worked on the Twin Cities campus of the University
of Minnesota for 32 years. In 2000, while Assistant Director of the Registrar’s
Office, Janet was part of a restructuring that combined the public contact
services of the Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid, and Student Accounts
into the One Stop Student Services Center.

The restructuring mandated that managers have bachelor’s
degrees, which Janet lacked. An exception was made for Janet, but the
experience underscored the value of credentials.

In spring 2009, she completed a campus-based bachelor’s
degree at the U of MN, while working full-time. By fall of that year Janet
began coursework in a campus-based master’s program (at the U of MN). Two
semesters into the Liberal Studies program, Janet decided a degree in project
management would be most beneficial to her career. “I wanted to get a degree
that was going to help me in my job,” Janet said.

“The project management program prepares you to work as a
manager in any organization. The methodologies used by the Project Management
Institute are fairly new, but projects are not new—they’ve been around
forever.Even if someone does not want to become a project manager, the classes
teach skills that help people manage projects,” Janet said.

Since the U of MN doesn’t offer a master’s in project
management, Janet began exploring options. A colleague, and UW-Platteville
alum, encouraged her to explore the program at UW-Platteville Online. The
program is one of only a select few to be globally accredited by the Project Management Institute (PMI)®.

“I liked online courses better than face-to-face
courses-perhaps because of my age. When you’re in your 50s and you’re attending
classes, and the majority of the people in class are in their 20s, you feel out
of place. When you’re online, you don’t get that feeling, in fact, being
online, it seemed like other students kind of looked up to you more for advice
and that worked out better for me,” Janet said.
